The True Meaning of “I Do”

October 6, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

These days it seems everywhere you turn there is another bridal show popping up on the TV. Shows like “Bridzilla”, “Say Yes To The Dress” and “Bridalplasty” have all taken over. These shows take on subjects from plastic surgery to fist fights for that perfect wedding dress. They show women at their worst trying to do too much so their special day is perfect.

But what happened to love? In the midst of these fights and embarrassing displays of women acting like spoiled ten year old little girl, the thought of the “I do’s” is the furthest thing from their bewitching mind. Some of the shows will show the husband just sitting quietly in a corner almost hiding from this torrid woman that was once his ideal partner. What happened to those men of yesterday that would stand up and let the woman know she was going a bit insane? Where are her true friends to call her out?

Even in the movie “Muriel’s Wedding” she had her best friend tell her she was insane and not the same wonderful friend she use to be. Muriel had become so set on a perfect wedding that she didn’t care who the man was, as long as there was a man at the end of the aisle who was breathing.

The main point of contention in most of these shows seems to go back to the dress. Yes THE dress! No one seems to be wearing the hand me downs from grandmother to mother to daughter. No one appears to be buying fabric by the yard to save some money for their future children. In fact they could kill two birds with one stone by not only buying fabric by the yard for their wedding dress, but they can get some quilting fabric at the same time to get a comfy blanket for their future baby. Think of all the money everyone would save if they made their own dress and then they would be able to have a small nest egg to begin their new life.

Another huge problem is the ring. Apparently none of these ladies have heard of blood diamonds and are still buying into the myth of an engagement ring in order to impress their friends. What about an amazing unique semi-precious stone that is one of a kind and half the cost of a truly useless shiny rock on your hand that probably cost someone’s life along the way.

Finally there is an unhealthy obsession that Americans have with their appearance. Why would you want to get a breast enhancement or lip injections prior to walking down the aisle? Aren’t you afraid he won’t recognize you? Women forget that the man proposed to them, their hearts, their minds, and yes their bodies. That is who he fell in love with. So don’t change it all before the wedding. He is in love with you. Your flaws are what make you so special.

So go turn off those TV sets and rethink what is important in your life. Is that $5,000 wedding dress worth it when you don’t have money for a new house? Are you okay with wearing a $4,000 ring that has blood on it or would you prefer to start a fund for your future child? Think about your priorities in life and remember that love is what makes your wedding day so special.

Growing Your Own Was Never Easier

August 9, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Space is not only the final frontier it is also that thing we covet the most in our own homes or apartments. With open space come possibilities. If you have available space in a basement, attic, garage or even closet under the stairs you might consider a grow room setup that will allow you to cultivate a wide variety of indoor plants. Most in-home growers are also handy when it comes to DIY projects. This will be helpful as you adapt what was once a storage space into a viable indoor garden.

There are some key components you need to consider when it comes to any grow room. First up would be the issue of access. Your grow space needs to allow you the ability to move about freely to take care of your plants. If you’re dealing with a simple closet set up then your access is limited to opening that closet door. However, when you get into larger rooms you want to make sure you’ve got a decent flow going between the aisles of plants.

This flow issue is also important when it comes to the issue of ease of use. A hydroponic garden is going to use a lot of water and that means additional weight. Will your grow room setup be able to accommodate this extra weight? That’s not a concern if you’re working out of a free standing building, but in an apartment building you might have to consider that extra load. As you fire up your grow lights you’re also going to be creating a humid atmosphere that can potentially cause problems for wallpaper or wooden moldings.

As important as your grow lights will be to your plants so too will the darkness when those lights cycle off. This means your grow room has to incorporate a total blackout in terms of outside light sources. Any light that you don’t regulate can set off the growth or diminishing of your plants. That’s certainly not what you want to contend with after all this hard work.

With regard to water, you have to think in terms of arrival and departure. Your grow room needs to incorporate an incoming supply of fresh water, but there also needs to be proper drainage for your plants. This is where you’ll be able to tap into the many online resources for help. You won’t need a degree in engineering to figure out a decent irrigation system; you’ll just need to follow directions.

Speaking of the internet, it is conceivable that you’ll be able to order your entire grow room setup online. Everything you need from the grow lights to the plant containers to a portable ventilation system is only a mouse click away. Depending on your potential crop, you might want to stay local for your seed purchase. However, everything else can be found online. You’ll also find a helpful support community who is willing to offer their sage advice. The best advice is to start small, get to know the indoor grow system and then take it where you want it to go!

Where To Shop For The Newest In Accessories

August 9, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

There are many hand held electronic devises these days and just as many accessories to go with them. You can find everything you need online, at places like eBay or Amazon. But be sure you know what you are looking for, because not everything is interchangeable or returnable.

For example, if you have an iPhone 3G, don’t expect that your previous iPhone adapter will work. Most of the time you will have to get not only a new adapter, but a new case to fit it as well. But relax; there are plenty of folks online selling iPhone 3Gs cases at good prices because they plan on upgrading to the next generation as soon as possible.

Also for those who prefer MP3 players over iPods, there are great deals you can find on Amazon, if you are willing to sacrifice your favorite color. The prices for the hippest or coolest colors are the most expensive, but if you don’t care too much about that sort of thing, then you can purchase a basic black cover for 60 percent off the regular retail price. And it is not just the MP3 covers; you can find iPod 3G cases super cheap right now, because the newer iPod 4G cases are in high demand. The more protection your iPod cases have, the higher the price might be. For example if you were to buy one of the sturdy silicone cases it will most likely cost more than a simple fabric case, because the silicone offers much more in the way of protecting your iPod.

And let us not forget all those ear buds, car chargers and basic adapters. It is always best to buy a package deal if you need the whole package. But sometimes all you might really need is the basic adapter. Also you may be surprised to find out that the Dollar Store will sometimes carry ear buds that will work with iPods and MP3 players. They might not be supper high quality, but they will do in a pinch and are perfect for as a backup pair.

So, before you get your heart set on one of the fancy new iPod 4G cases you saw at the mall, take the time to search online for a better price. You never know what kind of deals you might find with just a few minutes of research. But if you are determined to have the latest and greatest trendy MP3 or iPod cover, then talk to your local dealer. See if they are willing to make a package deal or at least perhaps throw in a free set of ear buds. It doesn’t hurt to ask and every little bit of savings helps in today’s fragile economy.

Change The Look and Feel of Any Room With a Mirror

August 9, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

One thing we all share in common it’s that at least once a day everybody gets a chance to stare at themselves. This is accomplished anytime we pass by a mirror. For some, this is just a true passing glance to make sure everything is in its proper place before heading out into the world. For others, the mirror has become their best friend who is always there to show them just how awesome they look. It’s those folks who actually have a hard time tearing themselves from the mirror! Mirrors aren’t just for us to gaze into. In the realm of home decorating, well placed round wall mirrors can improve the look and feel of any room. It certainly won’t bust your decorating budget by adding contemporary mirrors on the list of your proposed redesign plans.

The obvious benefit from hanging round wall mirrors on your wall is that they give the impression your room is actually larger than it really is. The bigger the mirror, the more open the room feels. With the right placement, you could actually have your mirror reflect the view from a window which is like having a double benefit of that great view.

For all practical purposes every mirror is built the same way. It is a piece of glass with a backing made from aluminum or silver that “seals” off one side of the glass and bounces back a reflection. What makes those mirrors a perfect pick for your home would be the kind of frames you choose to surround them in. This is where shopping online becomes a great benefit. If you have a mirror but need to find just the right frame you’ll be able to browse through an amazing variety of shapes, sizes and textures online.

The goal should be to tie your mirrors into the décor theme of the rest of your room. For instance, if you’ve gone modern with your furnishings then an antique wooden frame might not be the best choice. Another cool affect that can be accented through mirrors will be your choice of wall colorings. While white walls are still the most popular choice for walls homeowners are finding that deeper hues of reds, yellows and blues can transform a room and change the feel of your entire home.

Another simple tip for improving the look of a room is by bringing life into that room in the form of plants. The selection of your plants is as important as the selection of your contemporary mirrors. You don’t want plants that will become overgrown like vines or something that will be hard to maintain. Keep it simple.

Just as you can do all of your decorating shopping online you can also find plenty of inspiration from how other folks have redesigned their homes. Even beyond the professional home decorating websites you’ll find plenty of proud bloggers who are happy to show off what they’ve done in their homes. Who knows? You might just end up showing off your own decorating job!

Is Modern Technology Destroying Our Society?

August 9, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

It seems like you can buy almost anything online these days, leaving for us as a society little reason or need to venture outside. You can get groceries delivered to your door step, Christmas gifts bought and delivered or round picture frames to brighten up your place, all with a simple click of a mouse. But do you think all this online shopping is a good thing? Can there be such a factor as too much convenience?

Some experts have pointed out that with all this modern technology, we can now live our whole life without ever making direct contact with another human being. It is almost like living in a fish bowl or under the acrylic domes that modernization has created for our society. But not all experts agree completely that this is a bad idea.

Leading intellectual and activist, Noam Chomsky stated that, “Modern industrial civilization has developed within a certain system of convenient myths… Now it’s long been understood – very well – that a society that is based on this principle will destroy itself in time.” So, is it really that detrimental for us as a society to leave our comforts of online shopping at home and head to the local retail store to get those round picture frames or drive to the grocery store instead of having them delivered?

The answer is, no. Professor Chomsky is stating an obvious fact based on a reality that if we do stay inside our homes and are in a constant state of consuming and shopping that we could destroy ourselves. However, to buy something like a picture frame or maybe some second hand jewelry in the convenience of your home, will not break down our society.

English journalist and broadcaster, Simon Hoggart has a positive spin on consumerism that he wrote about in The Guardian stating, “Americans are fascinated by their own love of shopping. This does not make them unique. It’s just that they have more to buy than most other people on the planet. And it’s also an affirmation of faith in their country.” It appears that he is simply saying that we should be celebrating with great pride our gifts of modern technology and the ability to shop online that comes with it. It is downright patriotic according to Hoggart.

So the next time you want to spruce up your home with those square, oval or round picture frames, smile at the convenience and ability you have of shopping at any time of the day or night. Also think how lucky you are to be living in a time that offers so many different selections just for you to decorate your home in your own particular style. Technology and consumerism can indeed be a good thing after all.

Looking for Basketball Shoes?  Buy Them Online!

November 30, 2010 by · 15 Comments

Whether you need basketball shoes or women’s athletic shoes, everything you need is right at your fingertips!  By purchasing your shoes online, you can see 3 great benefits.

Why head out to the stores, when you can get everything you need right from the comfort of your own home?  By purchasing shoes online, you can have an array of men’s athletic shoes, dress shoes, women’s athletic shoes, sandals, and boots right at your fingertips!  Any type of shoe you can imagine can be found online.

Why head to the world wide web for your shoes?  There are 3 great reasons:

  1.  You can search by brand or type

If you only like Adidas shoes, you can tailor your search so that’s all that comes up.  Or, if you’re looking for a specific type of shoe – like basketball shoes – you can simply search through the different brands of basketball shoes.

And, your search can be as broad or as specific as you want.  If, for example, you’re looking for men’s athletic shoes, you can search for that.  Or, you can type in something more specific like ‘basketball shoes for men’.  Why walk through rows and rows of shoes at a store, when you can filter out the junk and search for exactly what you want online?

  2.  Shopping for shoes online lets you take advantage of better prices

Online retailers are much more likely to give you a discount because they do not have all of the expenses that traditional shoe stores do – like paying the electric bill at a brick and mortar store, hiring a full-time sales staff, or paying the rent on a prime storefront.

Plus, online retailers can also give you special discounts that traditional stores cannot – like free shipping, waiving the sales tax, or free returns and exchanges.

Let’s face it – buying something like women’s athletic shoes can be expensive.  You need all the discounts you can get, and you’re much more likely to get them online.

  3.  Online shoe retailers have a larger inventory

Nothing is more frustrating than driving around from store to store – especially when you’re looking for something basic, like basketball shoes.  But, with online stores, there tends to be a much bigger selection, because everything doesn’t have to fit inside an actual store.  Online retailers don’t have to worry about the logistics of fitting displays, stock, and people into a store.

Need Shoes? 3 Reasons Why You Should Buy Them Online

October 27, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Buying shoes online isn’t just about the convenience of shopping from home; if you head to the right online retailer, you can find some great deals.  Whether you need men’s casual shoes, women’s casual shoes, or kids’ shoes, shopping at an online shoe store offers great benefits.

Think about all of the time you spend shopping for shoes.  Buying kids’ shoes right before the school year starts can be a nightmare; the stores are filled with people, and it can be a very stressful experience.  Or, think about dragging your husband around, trying to get him to buy some men’s casual shoes.  It probably isn’t a fun experience!  That’s why shoe shopping online is so handy.  You can get the shoes you need, without the hassle of going all over town!

And, thanks to new websites, it is easy to buy any kind of shoes online that you want.  Need men’s casual shoes?  No problem.  Want a few pairs of women’s casual shoes?  No problem.  Need to find sturdy kids’ shoes?  No problem.
Aside from being able to stay home, there are 3 other great reasons to shop online for your shoes:

  1.  Shoe websites can offer better deals and discounts than the traditional stores can.
  2. Online shoe retailers do not have the expenses that come with running a brick and mortar shoe store.  There is no electric bill to pay, no janitors to pay, no rent to pay.  That means they can pass on better savings to you.  In fact, some online shoe retailers offer great incentives – like discounts you won’t find anywhere else, free shipping, no sales tax, or free returns and exchanges.

  3.  Shoe websites have their own mini search engines – so you can find what you need, faster.
  4. Don’t you hate it when you have to wander around a shoe store, looking for a particular type of shoe, or a certain brand?  When you shop for shoes on a good shoe website, there is a little search box that helps you find what you need, quickly.  Looking for a pair of Adidas shoes? Just type “Adidas shoes” into the search box, and the site’s entire Adidas inventory will pop up in a matter of seconds!

  5.  Shoe websites have dedicated customer service departments to handle any issues you face.
  6. Have you ever seen a customer service department in a traditional shoe store?  Probably not.  But, when you shop online, there are actual customer service agents that can help you – whether you need to return a pair of shoes that doesn’t fit, or you need help using the website.
